The corrosion of steel in a particular environment is influenced by the action of microorganisms such as bacteria, algae and fungi. This is also known as ‘Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion’ (MIC). MIC frequently occurs in natural, untreated and stagnant water, for example in cooling water systems, wastewater treatment plants, but also in groundwater or other contaminated water in new systems following pressure tests. MIC is not easy to combat and requires a careful, determined approach. This approach can be costly and may, at times, have a significant impact on operations.

Corrosive liquids can also cause rapid corrosion of steel and damage to the tank wall, which has a negative impact on maintenance costs. Composite material, glass-fibre-reinforced vinyl ester/polyester, is extremely resistant to corrosive chemicals and impervious to MIC, making it an excellent material for storage tanks in the petrochemical industry.

At Verwater Composites’ production site in Moerdijk, composite tanks with diameters ranging from 6 to 14 metres and a maximum capacity of up to 4,000 m3 can be manufactured. Further advantages include:

  • Short production lead times
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Low CO2 footprint and low environmental impact
  • Long service life
  • Cost-effective and sustainable: high strength-to-weight ratio
  • Maintenance-free: Virtually no maintenance is required, and composite materials are characterised by high durability.
